Mentors

A friendly player can show you around your first two weeks. It's always your choice, it's free, and you can stop any time. See who's mentoring on the website at Mentors.

Mentors are players who like showing newcomers around: where things are, how claims work, where the good fishing is. They volunteer their time. What a mentor says is never a staff decision, even when the mentor happens to be on staff.

Mentoring is just starting up. If the page says the first mentors are still signing up, nobody is listed yet, and staff and chat are glad to help in the meantime. Type /help in game for the Server Guide.

For newcomers

You're a newcomer for your first two weeks after you first step into Aldoria.

  1. Pick someone who's free. Choose from the list on Mentors, or type /mentor list in game. A mentor can also offer to help you in game, and you can say yes, no, or "don't ask again". Nobody is ever assigned to you.
  2. Say yes twice. Before anything happens you're told exactly what pairing shares, and you confirm. Your mentor sees which first steps you've reached and, unless you've hidden it, when you're online. They never see where you are or what you're carrying.
  3. Play together for a couple of weeks. You can message your mentor any time. They can reply once you've written, and they can't start a private chat with you.
  4. Say thanks if you'd like. After a few days you might be asked whether it helped. A yes sends them a thank-you; any other answer stays with staff. You can skip it.

You can stop whenever you like: End mentoring in Away, or /mentor end in game. Your mentor only sees that it has ended. If something feels wrong, pick End and tell staff, use /report in game, or message a staff member.

Your own first steps are always the Quest Master's First steps in Quests. Away → Mentors shows what you've done so far, with or without a mentor.

Your settings

In Away → Mentors, or in game:

SettingIn game

Becoming a mentor

Mentoring opens at Level 10, after 10 hours in Aldoria and your first two weeks here, with no recent bans or mutes. Sign up on Mentors: say what you like helping with, when you're usually on, the languages you're happy chatting in and a rough time zone (never a city). An admin looks at every sign-up before you're listed.

Every mentor agrees to the mentor promise:

  1. Keep it friendly and in the open: in game, or in public Discord channels.
  2. Never ask a newcomer for items, money, Coins, passwords or personal details, and never ask them to move to another app or a private server.
  3. You mentor as a player, even if you're on staff. Don't promise rule decisions or hand out punishments. Point people to /report or a staff member.
  4. Let them lead. If they'd rather play on their own, that's fine.
  5. Staff can see pairings, and may end one or take someone off the list.
  6. Never ask for a thank-you or tell them what to answer. It's their choice.
  7. What you see about your newcomer (their first steps and when they're online) is only for helping them. Don't share it.

You can mentor two newcomers at once. /mentor offer <player> offers to help someone new who's online; /mentor break and /mentor back take you off the list and put you back.

The Mentor title

Once staff have seen a newcomer you mentored settle in, you get the Mentor tag (pick it in /tags) and a line on your profile: "Helped 3 newcomers settle in". That's the whole reward: no Coins, keys or Level XP. The title stays yours if you step down. Staff only take it away for how someone behaved.
