Archaeology

Eight dig sites lie in the wild country of the play world, each a lit cut in the ground with a ladder, a survey sign and a lectern of notes. /dig sites points you toward each one, and a site you have worked out settles again after a while. Bring an ordinary brush, hold right-click on a deposit and keep going until it is done, as you would on suspicious sand. A crack shows your progress. Stop for more than a few seconds, or look at another deposit, and you start over.

When the brushing finishes you lift the find free and it goes into your inventory. Nothing is dug out of the world and nobody can take it from you.

What you find

Every find is an original, with its own picture: a Pressed Clay Seal, a Kiln Spur, a Mooring Ring, a Granary Key, a Wax Tablet Shard. There are more than a hundred kinds, sorted as sherds, seals, tools, vessels, samples, documents, ornaments, tokens and fittings, and some are far harder to come by than others. Each is recorded once, with its finder, its site, its layer and the date, and none can be found twice. Names and descriptions say what we know. Anything that is a guess says "may".

Some finds are keepsakes that become a Legend with you as the first to open them. The others are yours to keep, or to give to the Museum.

Collections

The finds come in collections of eight that explain one trade or place together: The Potter's Bench, The Ferry Landing, Granary Reckoning, The Counting House, The Cutting Gang and more. Type /dig sets to see how many of each you have recovered. Finish a collection and your notebook shows what the pieces may show when read side by side. A collection is for reading and for showing off; it pays nothing. The Archaeology page lists every collection.

A find is never used up by accident: it will not craft into anything, smelt, or slip into a furnace or anvil.

Claims

A deposit inside a claim can only be brushed if the claim's owner allows it. Owners standing in their claim use /dig allow <site> and /dig disallow <site>.
