Mysteries

Now and then the Chronicle prints a story on its back page under A mystery for readers. The story is fiction. The place in it is real, and you can walk there in Aldoria and look around for yourself. Every mystery the paper has printed has its own page on Mysteries for readers: the story so far, and how to get there.

How it works

  1. Read the story. Its page on the website has every piece the paper printed.
  2. Go there. Walk into the places the story names. Each one you find is a clue: you get a line in chat and the sound of a page turning (not with /quiet on), and the clue goes into your Codex (/codex) under the mystery's name. It shows on the mystery's page too, where only you can see it.
  3. Talk to the person in the story. Clicking starts a conversation. Press Sneak to turn each page and listen to the end: that conversation counts as a clue as well.
  4. Answer the question. Once you have every clue, click the same person again. You're asked one question, and four numbered answers appear in chat.

Type /mystery at any time to see which clues you have found.

Answering

  • On Java: click the answer you think is right.
  • On Bedrock, or if you'd rather type: /mystery answer and the number, for example /mystery answer 2.

The answers are shuffled every time you're asked, so the right number changes from one go to the next. You have two minutes to answer, and you need to stay near the person who asked.

A wrong answer is fine. You're told which clue to look at again, and after a minute you can try once more. There's no limit on tries.

Nudges

Type /mystery hint for a nudge about the first thing you haven't done yet. Each clue has three nudges, and each one says a little more than the one before. The mystery's page has the same nudges under Show a nudge, and the two share one count, so a nudge you've read on the website isn't shown to you again in game. Nobody else can see how many you used.

Comparing notes with friends

Type /mystery friends to see how far your friends have got: who has solved it, and which clues the others have found, by name only. Their notes never say what a clue said, and they don't count for you: you still walk to each place and hear each conversation yourself. Signed in, the mystery's page shows the same under Comparing notes.

Your friends see your progress when your Quests privacy is Everyone or Friends. To keep it to yourself, turn off Let my friends see how far I've got on the mystery's page, or type /mystery private on. Someone you've blocked, or who blocked you, never sees your notes.

Rewards

When you solve itWhat you get
In gameA title of its own in /tags, and the mystery's quest marked done in /quests
On the mystery's pageA Solved badge with the date
In the ChronicleYour name in the Mysteries Solved column, if your privacy allows it (below)

There are no Coins or items. The quest counts as a finished quest like any other, so a solve can fill in the Codex's "Finish Your First Quest" objective.

You can solve each mystery once. A mystery never closes, so you can solve it months after the paper printed it.

Your name

When you solve a mystery, your name can go on its page and in the paper's solved list. That only happens when your Quests privacy setting is Everyone. To keep your name off anyway:

  • type /mystery private on in game (and /mystery private off to follow your privacy settings again), or
  • turn off Show my name when I solve it on the mystery's page.

Spoilers

Please keep the answer to yourself, so everyone gets to find it.
